Malas have traditionally been used in prayer and meditation. You can wear them around your wrist, your neck, hang them at your altar, or meditate with them.
Malas in Meditation
People turn to mala beads for different reasons. Some turn to the jewelry for prayer, others for fashion. Some of us use the malas to focus and still the mind during meditation. Meditation can be implemented in your daily life at any time, and on a basic level it is all about being present in the moment, being connected to the Earth and the environment, and the people you are with. It's about slowing down and taking a peaceful moment to think "What am I doing?"
The great thing about meditating with a mala is that it combines the recitation of sacred sounds, acupressure, gemstone therapy, and deep meditative practice. It's widely believed that when one uses a mala for meditation, and works through every bead, they will have found enlightenment.
The different fingers used in mala Meditation
There are acupressure points on each finger that work on different parts of the brain and the psyche. The beads press the meridian points in the finger, located on the side of the finger, in the center point between the tip and the upper knuckle. The properties of the meridian points for each finger are:
➳ Index Finger (Jupiter Finger) → Wisdom, Knowledge, Prosperity
➳ Middle Finger (Saturn Finger) → Patience
➳ Ring Finger (Sun Finger) → Health, Vitality
➳ Little Finger (Mercury Finger) → Communication, Intelligence
Mala Beads in Yoga
Ever seen beaded yoga necklaces and wondered what they mean? Well, the use of mala beads is particularly relevant when it comes to practicing the sixth and seventh limbs of yoga: dharana (concentration), and dhyana (meditation). Holding the mala bead between your fingers is said to bring single awareness (dharana) into a mantra repetition. The beads help to keep the mind free of distractions and outside thoughts. This practice leads to a steady stream of concentration (dhyana). Dhyana allows the mind to become effortlessly quiet and still.
How to use mala beads as a Meditation aid
If you practice meditation or yoga regularly, you may want to use mala beads as an aid. Learning how to use a mala is simple, easy, and enjoyable. Before you start, you have to clarify the intention of your practice and choose your mantra.
Follow these simple steps:
➳ Find a comfortable place to sit quietly in a cross legged position.
➳ Close your eyes and pay attention to your natural breath.
➳ Start to breathe deeply and bring your focus to your mantra.
➳ Hold the mala in your left (receiving) hand with the beads between your index finger and thumb. Hold it gently and start counting with the first bead after the "guru" bead.
➳ Use your thumb to count each smaller bead, pulling it towards you as you recite.
➳ Count a bead for each completed recitation. By doing this, you are less likely to become distracted by your thoughts.
➳ When you complete either 7, 21, 27, or 108 recitation, do not skip over the guru bead. Instead, turn the mala around and move it in the opposite direction.
➳ Do not become discouraged. This takes practice to accomplish correctly. Some practices require 100,000 mantra recitations to be completed.
How to create your own Meditation space
Meditation is your time to relax and you surely want to make it special. So why not add a dash of excitement! Maybe create a spiritual corner in your home where you look forward to visiting every day. Here are some tips on how to create an exclusive meditation space in your home:
➳ Choose a location of your liking
If you have a room with a scenic view of lush green trees, a flowery garden, or blue waters, it couldn't get any better. If you want to use another room which may not have such a scenic setting, you can always get creative and decorate the room yourself. Maybe put up a poster or painting which will make you feel close to nature.
➳ Keep the area clean and uncluttered
If the area surrounding you is clean, your mind can be relaxed during meditation. Consider emptying out the room to contain only a few elements. A few basic recommendations include a small table, a mat, a throw rug, and a pillow for meditation.
➳ Keep the room airy
A well-ventilated room is surely going to make your meditation experience more enjoyable.
➳ Bring nature into the room
It is sometimes not possible to meditate in a natural environment, especially if you live in an urban area. In this case, add touches of nature to your room like a plant, a vase of flowers, a small water fountain, or jars of sand.
➳ Play meditative music
Music can be relaxing for many individuals. It is especially beneficial if you live in a busy city area. It is recommended you choose music without lyrics. Play any sounds you find soothing like ocean waves, birds chirping, or the whistling sounds of the wind.
The use of essential oils like lavender, chamomile, and peppermint can soothe the soul, the mind and the body. From burning candles to heating oils, aromatherapy is a healing aid that is believed to stimulate brain function.
➳ Add a personal touch
It can be any element: smell, sound, or an object that soothes your body and relaxes your mind. Think of items like Buddha statues, crystals, mala beads, bells, or artwork.
Mala beads will protect you, guide you in daily life, and will serve as a constant reminder of the divinity that is within you.
Now that you've found your perfect mala, it's time to set your intention and truly make it yours. You have to power it up! Not the person who recommended it to you, not the person who sold it to you. It's highly essential you do it yourself. The more energy of your chosen intention you focus on the piece, the more power you give it. It's the law of attraction. It is said that Monday is the day of Lord Shiva and it is most favorable day to perform this intention setting ceremony.
Intention Setting Ceremony
➳ Find a tranquil place and sit in a comfortable position. Light a candle or incense, play some music, and get cozy.
➳ Wash your mala in pure water with flowers. Close your eyes and breathe. Breathe in your natural rhythm without forcing anything.
➳ Move the beads through your fingers and with a calm and clear mind, state your intention. Say something empowering. For example, instead of "I want to lose weight this season", say something like, "I want to feel strong, healthy, and radiant". Open up your heart and raise your voice. Surrender your intentions to the universe.
➳ Visualize yourself finding piece of mind and inner calmness. Be present in the moment.
➳ To activate and seal in the energy in your mala, you must chant this mantra at least three times: Om Hrim Namah Shivaya Om.
➳ Hold the mala on your heart and send it your heart energy. Bring the mala to your third eye, right above your eyebrows and project your intention to it.
➳ Sit for another 10 minutes to seal the energetic bond.
Don't forget to remind yourself daily of your intentions. Create a spiritual ritual for yourself. And "water" your mala with regular attention. Whenever you feel overwhelmed or anxious, take hold of the Guru Stone and feel the energy of the healing crystals guiding you to peace.

➳ Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana) – represents our creativity and sexual center; it is located above the pubic bone, below the navel;
➳ Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – represents our ability to be confident and in control of our lives; it is located in the upper abdomen in the stomach area;
➳ Heart Chakra (Anahata) – represents our ability to love and be compassionate; it is located in the center of our chest, just above the heart;
➳ Throat Chakra (Vishudda) – represents our ability to communicate; it is located in the throat
➳ Third-Eye Chakra (Ajna) – represents our ability to focus and see the big picture; it is located between the eyebrows;
➳ Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – represents our connection to the spiritual; it is located in the crown of the head;
